There have been a number of mornings, since I started working at SAIT, that I have been lucky enough to watch the sun rise over the city of Calgary. These days, unfortunately, correspond with days that I am unlucky enough to be at SAIT at 5:30 in the morning. The good often comes hand in hand with the bad.
The battle between the rising and the Sun and the stalwart beaming of the city lights is enjoyable to watch, and the large windows of the SAIT pool make my vantage point as good as any box seats. The City, beaming in the night, surreal in its appearance, has yet to win. The Sun is relentless, rising every morning and constantly, slowly, meticulously, filling the sky with its orange glare.
I can’t help but cheer for the City, the clear underdog in this fight, and its persistence in trying to hold onto its night-time majesty. Of course the Sun isn’t without its grandeur. This very morning the Sun took the time to show its artistry by outlining the low-lying clouds with glowing orange highlights. Underdogs can be damned when such a skillful presentation can be made.
It will be more than a week until I’m lucky enough to see the battle again, though I’m certain they’ll fight it out tomorrow. Until then I’ll count myself lucky, as I breathe heavily under engorged quilts, that I am not majestic enough to be quarreled with daily by a foe as unrelenting as the Sun.
I spent my morning, after work, at Higher Grounds down in Kensington, where I got a good deal of homework accomplished. I think now is a good time to head back to SAIT for a workout, and then perhaps back home.
Ahh yes, I also enjoy such displays of wonder as the morning fills with indescribably changing color. Spring and fall as I drive each morning to see the rise and then again each night as it has made its way to it's setting. Colors and a new scenery of cloud, always new, always fascinating, always powerful enough to inspire. If it's a battle, it's a glorious battle.
